Our story began centuries ago, when Portuguese explorers set out in search of spices. After many adventures and months of sailing the high seas, they accomplished their mission. The famous Spice Route to the East had been discovered.!

Southern Africa soon became a stopover for the explorers and, with its glorious climate and beautiful terrain, many of them settled there. It was here that they discovered the Birds-Eye Chilli, called "Pili-Pili" by the local Swahilli's, The settlers adopted the name "Peri-Peri", and start using this fiery ingredients with a blend of herbs as part of their cuisine.

Peri-Peri recipes have always been a source of family pride, and have been passed down from generation to generation. The Nando's Peri-Peri sauces are just a recipe - a combination of old-world mystery and fiercely guarded family secrets.

The "Peri-Peri" Fiery African Birds Eye Chilli is grown on the east coast of Africa, where it gives distinct flavour to typical Afro-Portuguese dishes such as Peri-Peri Chicken. The Fresh, grassy flavour and the potent heat of the birds eye chilli makes it ideal for use in sauces and casseroles. The chillies are small in size (ranging from 2 to 4 cm in length) and the shape resembles the beak of a bird rather than the eye. Birds eye chillie belong to the class "Capsicum frutescens" and are very easy to cultivate at home as they require very little water and moderate temperatures.
